Colombia in the news:
Check out this article in the NY Times (subscription may be required) about a dance academy in the impoverished neighborhoods of Cartagena. Juan Forero has periodic articles about Colombia in the Times that often show the vibrancy and life that is overshadowed by violence and conflict.
Alex Fattal, founder of Disparando Camaras para la Paz (Shooting Cameras for Peace), will discuss his work on "Reframing Conflict, Building Peace through Participatory Media" through a multimedia presentation on the children displaced by conflict in Colombia. Monday, April 25, 6:00-7:30PM, Center for Documentary Studies, 1317 West Pettigrew St., Durham, NC. For more information on Alex and his project, visit www.ajaproject.org (click on Colombia project).
From Plan Colombia and Beyond, The Center for International Policy's Colombia Program blog, Colombia falls to 7th largest recipient of US foreign aid, not necessarily a drop in amount, but relative to the increases in aid to the middle east. No other country outside of the middle east comes close.
Podcasting:
I feel an obligation to recommend two podcasts that I really enjoy: Daily Sonic and Ritmo Latino. Daily Sonic is a daily mp3zine with news, independent and undergraound music, fringe culture, art, travel, fashion, technolog,...it is a glimpse into NYC "hiplectic" culture. Ritmo Latino is an hour long latin music program from public radio on the Pacific island of Saipan...great music.
Spring is back and we are slowly emerging from layers of clothing and escaping our caves to bask in the sunshine. Lu and I both have bicylces now and take advantage of every opportunity to get around town by our own propulsion...doing our bit for the global good. We are doing well and hope you all are as well.
